The year ends
Unlike Ricky I AM going to post my now customary top 5 lists.
But first a summary. Cara has been an awesome girlfriend over the past year, and we have had a great time together. I have always looked forward to Friday night hangouts with the girls. My family still rocks. Dave is sadly missed. Sean and Debbie have been truly great housemates. I went to Sydney, which was sweet. Hero arrived, which was kind of magical (I think I enjoyed buying him a 0 yr old birthday present a little too much.) I left Motorola after 4.5 years of being underpaid and having a great time with other guys who were also underpaid and under-appreciated (I may have left moto the year before this one). I worked at ERG for 6 months, which scared me about the 'real' outside world. Then I came to Thales which has been brilliant. I have planned a world trip with Cara, which should be a lifetime highlight. I played basketball for 3 teams, Social, D grade mens and A-grade mens. This resulted in me being really tired almoist every day when I woke up. It also resulted in me doing myself a knee injury and having to sit out of sports for 3 months and waste a lot of money on rehab and pilates (not actually a waste, believe me). Also my social life was basically non-existant what with basketball 3 times a week, and visiting the old's on a Thursday I was basically only free on weekends. Me and Cara had some landlord hassles, which were eased after we found someone else to move into our South Perth house. Ricky's brother gave us some great advice on that problem. I stay up too late most nights, but it is sooo hard to get to sleep when it is this hot. I played Wow in an on again off again kinda way. It is good for catch-ups but also feels kinda like a leech on my life. I have watched so much awesome TV, and listened to so much awesome music and seen so many awesome movies over the last year. I love catching up with Ferg, Rachel, Anna, Mel, Evil Clare, Aidos, Chelsea and Good Claire, even if I don't see any of them anough. And Ricky is still the best best friend. When we hang out I feel great, and happy and I chuckle. Chuckling could solve a lot of the worlds problems.
Now, onto the awards:
*** Top 5 Movies ***
This was a pretty damn good year for blockbuster movies. But some of the best ones weren't even very hyped.
1. Juno
2. Iron Man
3. 21
4. WALL-E
5. The Dark Knight
(6 - cause Juno may have come out last year?). Kung Fu Panda
*** Top 5 TV Shows ***
This was a solid year for TV. Even with the Writers strike. Heros got worse than last year. Dexter got better (or stayed as good), and a couple of things were a little unexpected.
1. Dexter
2. Weeds
3. Flight of The Conchords
4. The IT Crowd
5. Heroes
Unlucky to miss out: Survivor, Dr. Who, Supernatural, Spicks and Specks.
*** Top 5 Albums ***
This is a category I think about all year. Then I almost always forget something obvious that I loved. But I loved music a LOT this year. Here's a sample.
1. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
2. Flight Of The Conchords - Flight of The Conchords
3. The Wombats - The Wombats present... A Guide To Love, Loss And Desperation
4. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank (I Think this came out last year, but I don't care)
5. Rivers Cuomo - Alone (The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo)
Unlucky to Miss Out: Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend, The Hives - The Black and White Album, Rolling Stone Magazines Top 500 Songs, Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs, The Fratellis - Here We Stand
*** Top 5 Gigs ***
1. Neil Sedaka: Perth Convention Centre - This gig I went to with my Mum and Dad and my Sister, and about 2000 octagenarians. We were the four youngest people there, and Dad is close to 70. But it was awesome. The guy puts on a great show, and we all had a fantastic sing along.
2. The Wombats: Capitol - This was the best singalong/mosh/dance pure joy gig of the year. So fun. I was floating on a cloud afterwards.
3. Death Cab For Cutie: Metro's Freo - This was a fun gig, surrounded by friends. We sang along and had fun. This gig would have been higher, but Ben Gibbard looks weird now that he is skinny, and they didn't play Photobooth.
4. The Kings Of Leon: Southbound '08 - They put on a damn good show. It was just a pity that it was so cold.
5. The Fratellis: Capitol - These guys were a lot better than I expected. The front-man was mesmerising.
Unlucky to miss out: Boys Boys Boys at Amplifier, The Thrills/Sparkadia at The Fly By.
*** Top 5 Songs ***
1. Time To Pretend - MGMT
2. Ladies of The World - Flight of The Conchords
3. Runaround Sue - Dion
4. Patricia The Stripper - The Wombats
5. Pork and Beans - Weezer
I am looking forward to next year. Seeya there.
